Developing a Distinct Guitar Playing Style

Once you have been playing guitar for a while and acquired some basic guitar skills and techniques, you will in all probability want to start developing your own personal guitar playing style. You do want to express yourself, don't you? If you want to really learn how to play guitar, you'll sooner or later wish to do more than simply copy different guitarists' sounds. Not one other individual alive can play the same as you and with "your" sound when you unlock it. Don't you suppose it's time to dig in and unleash your individual sound and guitar playing style on the world?

The Effect of Being One of a Kind

Irrespective of your chosen style and genre (be it metal, jazz, classical, blues, rock, country, etc.), gunning to develop your very own individual guitar playing style is one thing it's possible for you to - and which you ought to make an attempt to - do. A terrific means of doing that is to sample other types of music that you just would not or don't ordinarily listen to. Escape your standard mould on occasion and select a radio station at random. Then discover something to like about it. Don't restrict yourself to only your favourite bands and artists. Every guitarist ought to be listening every now and then to legends like B.B.King, Chet Atkins, and Andre Segovia. These guys are masters to be studied. They're giants of blues, country, and Spanish classical, respectively, and had a really large influence on guitarists the world over.

Or take guitarists like Tommy Emmanuel and Eric Clapton. It makes no difference whether or not they're playing electric guitars or acoustic guitars, you know it's them. They clearly learned all the basics laid down by the masters after which they delved deep to search out their own style. By learning "to feel" the music. By studying every method in the book for precisely expressing what's inside their heads.

If you want to be an amazing guitarist with your own personal, distinct guitar playing style that folks instantly recognise, you, too, need to think about doing something different. There isn't any reason you can't. To do that, though, you may want to "stretch your ears" and soak up some tunes beyond the confines of your normal radio-listening and CD collection.

A Personal Style is Grander than the Influences Alone

Only by overcoming the resistance to listen to and play various things (and to really feel it) will you begin to find and draw out your own personal and unique style. Of course, I'm not suggesting you play a style or piece that you just don't like or have absolutely no interest in! I do believe it's a good suggestion, though, to experiment with stuff: change your strings, learn how to make use of the tone controls on your guitar, experiment with completely different combos of pick-ups, learn totally different techniques (such as playing in different modes or alternate picking), have a go at playing using extra down-strokes, like Johnny Ramone; the possibilities go on and on... The key is to listen carefully and make a note what you like and what you don't. Just remember who you are and what it is that you would like the music to express.

An odd sort of "that's not me" feeling will probably come over you at first. Don't worry. Simply let it wash over you and proceed with your exploration. Over time it'll all go into a big melting pot in your head and start to come out as something fresh and new and different. And yours. A type of "synthesis" will happen. You will take all the little "snippets" you have been gathering and put them together in combinations that no one has ever accomplished before! And right about then you'll start to feel that you're "in the zone." You'll know that you have finally developed your own distinctive guitar playing style to be proud of.

I'm trying to play MP3 files from a web site on windows xp but nothing happens. Are they compatible?
I'm taking guitar playing lessons on the internet. There are sections where I can listen to these lessons, but when I click on the link, which happens to be an MP3 file, I get a blank screen whith a yellow exclamation mark next to the "done" message at the bottom of the page. Does that mean that XP cannot play MP3 files? In the answer is no, what am I doing wrong?
