The Best Acoustic Guitar Songs for Beginners to Play at a Party

The first guitar I ever played was a Hofner arched-top guitar way back when I was just nine years old. It belonged to my Dad, who was a jazz guitarist, and it was one of the many vintage acoustic guitars my Dad owned. I played that guitar listening to such guitar greats as Eric Clapton of Cream, Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple, Jimmy Page from Led Zep, Santana, BB King and Hendrix back in the 70's. Al Dimeola, Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler, Malmsteen, Stevie Ray and Satriani in the 80s, John Petrucci of Dream Theatre (although I never heard of him until 2000) in the 90s. Now, these guys are the best at their style of playing. However, some of the best acoustic guitar songs ever produced are some of the simplest songs requiring very few basic skills that even a beginner can master.

When you first start off playing the guitar, one of the most thrilling parts of playing is being able to play at a party. This is not as hard as you might think; even for a beginner, because there are many easy guitar songs that even a beginner, with a few skills under their belt, can play.

The basic skills you need

Skill One: you need to know at least three major guitar chords and at least three minor chords well enough to play in various positions on the fretboard and those chords should sound smooth, clear and crisp. Track down some lessons on Youtube.

Skill Two: you must be able to switch from chord to chord smoothly, effortlessly and in time with the song.

Skill Three: you need to learn how to strum in time with the song you are playing.

One tip to bring these skills together: you should play along with the songs you are learning. This will give a better sense for changing chords, strumming in time and singing with the song.

The Best Acoustic Guitar Songs for Parties

Everyone loves a good party with a guitar and singing. The best acoustic guitar songs to play are some of the easiest ever produced; and they are all well-known around the world.

My favourite guitar songs to play at parties

Some of my favourite guitar songs emerged from the 1960s. For example some of the Beatles songs: Come Together, Let it be, and Hey Jude are great party songs. Another late 60s early 70s group Creedence Clearwater Revival brought out some of the best party songs such as: Born on the Bayou, Have you ever seen the rain and Bad Moon Rising. The Doobie Brothers distinct sound is also popular with the party crowd and include such notables as: Listen to the Music and Long Train Running. The Rolling Stones gave the world Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk Women, Satisfaction and Jumping Jack Flash. These songs are twelve of the Best Acoustic Guitar songs that are easy to play with just a few basic skills and would go well at any party.

Twelve other easy guitar songs to add to the list include: Bob Marley's No Woman No Cry and Redemption Song, Bob Dylan's All along the watch tower, Knocking on heaven's door and Blowin in the Wind. Add to that Wild Thing, the Troggs, Wish you were Here by Pink Floyd, Hotel California The Eagles, Drive by Incubus, and I'm Yours by Jason Mraz. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Californication and Wonderwall by Oasis wrap up this second list of twelve.

All of these 24 guitar songs can be played by a beginner who has mastered the basic tips above. You can learn all these songs by yourself without taking formal guitar lessons; there is no need to pay anyone. These songs will be a great addition to your repertoire of easy acoustic guitar songs. Above all, play the songs you want to learn, the songs that appeal to you; therein lays the secret to enjoying playing the acoustic guitar.

Playing the guitar will put you in another world. It is a world that anyone can enjoy with a few key skills. While I do not think that a beginner needs one-on-one tutoring to learn the basics of the guitar there are some skills that you will need help and direction with if you want to learn how to play like any of your guitar heroes. Online tutoring or lessons will not cost you a fortune. For the cost of a decent meal at a fancy restaurant you can get an entire year of lessons and learn to play your favourite licks in rock and country; you can even learn to play acoustic blues guitar like any of the blues greats. So, once you experience the thrill at playing at a party and dazzle them with your acoustic blues guitar songs, track down some lessons to accelerate your learning and enjoy the experience

What is a good/easy TAB for a beginner acoustic guitar song?
I was looking for a song that I would know (maybe rock) that I might be able to learn a few easy chords on, but some notes would also be good. I would really appreciate the link to the tab. I really appreciate all your input!
