Learn To Play Guitar Chords

At the end of the day, you are going to have to learn all the chords anyhow but I have listed below the three chords that I think will lead you gently into the wonderful world of playing the guitar.

Learn To Play Guitar Chords

I have chosen these three chords because so many songs and music are based on them. Not just on guitar but music in general. They are easy to perform because they are in the key of C major. There are no sharps or flats. The notes in the key of C major are C D E F G A B.

The notes that are the basis of many songs are the 1st, 4th and 5th so that would mean C F and G.

Ok now we know which chords to learn first on guitar, how do you play them?

Ok.

C is as follows:-

|--0--| 1st String This string is left open.
|--1--| 2nd String Your 1st finger goes on the 1st fret of the 2nd string.
|--0--| 3rd String This string is left open.
|--2--| 4th String Your 2nd finger goes on the 2nd fret of the 4th string.
|--3--| 5th String Your 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the 5th string.
|--X--| 6th String This string should not be played.

F is as follows:-

|--1--| 1st String Your 1st finger goes on the 1st fret of the 1st string.
|--1--| 2nd String Your 1st finger also goes on the 1st fret of the 2nd string.
|--2--| 3rd String Your 2nd finger on the 2nd fret of the 3rd string.
|--3--| 4th String Your 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the 4th string.
|--X--| 5th String This string should not be played.
|--X--| 6th String This string should not be played.

G is as follows:-

|--3--| 1st String Your 3rd finger goes on the 3rd fret of the 1st string.
|--0--| 2nd String This string is left open.
|--0--| 3rd String This string is left open.
|--0--| 4th String This string is left open.
|--2--| 5th String Your 1st finger goes on the 2nd fret of the 5th string.
|--3--| 6th String Your 2nd finger goes on the 3rd fret of the 6th string.

Just start off slowly and make sure you get the chord shapes correct. After a while you fingers will get used to the shapes. When they do, try moving from one chord to the other. It will feel very awkward at first and will make your finger tips sore and probably your forearm too but this will soon wear off as your finger tips harden and your forearm gets stronger.

Keep practicing every day and at the end of the third or fourth day, it will become almost automatic.

Listen to some music and see if you can hear the chord sounds. When you do, it will be worth every ache, pain and moment you have put in.

Now you know which chords to learn first on guitar and how to play them,

Go and do it.
